His will is dated 1815-04-17 and is recorded in Will Book A p66, Spartanburg Dist SC.
I obtained a copy. It mentions:
wife Salley; sons Charles, Holman, William; sons-in-law John Lipscomb, David Lipscomb, Richard
Simmons, Reubin Smith, John Willis, William Burdon, and Thomas Smith
Three of the wives are named as Betsy, Frances, and Patsey, but their husbands are not indicated.
Genforum message 43871 says 11 children of Edward + Sally are listed in
Spartanburg Co Equity Bill box 2, package 8, year 1821; on file at SC archives, Columbia SC

from DAR records:
He was a Captain from VA in the Revolutionary War. He also was a 2nd LT under CAPT Joshua Leak.
see Gwathmey, Hist Reg of VA in the Rev War, p720
In the DAR database he is number A105159.

The marriage of Edward + Sally is recorded in
"The Douglas Register: Being a detailed record of Births, Marriages, and Deaths together with other
interesting notes, as kept by the Rev William Douglas, from 1750 to 1797".
It gives his birthplace as Albemarle Co and hers as Goochland Co.
[But Albemarle was formed in 1744 from Goochland and Louisa.]
Also recorded are their first 4 children:
p68: (no gender or name given) baptized 1764-08-08
p73: daughter Betty baptized 1766-02-02
p79: dau Sally born 1767-11-04 baptized 1767-12-06
p86: son William born 1769-09-23 baptized 1769-10-08

One RootsWeb entry says his father was Augustine Smith c1700 VA.
Some trees at Ancestry.com say his parents were John Smith 1695 Richmond VA d 1740 Richmond + Mary Colston 1700 Halifax VA d 1755 VA. John and Mary seem to have lived in Richmond their whole lives, but Edward was born in Albemarle Co.
