Notes:
from Ancestry.com Essex England message board
when my uncle traced back, he found out the original Ellett did come from Scotland, but had changed the name back in the middle ages when the Normans ruled Great Britain. Apparently, they blended with the Normans and did not want the name to sound so Scottish. The story goes that their neighbors tried to run them out of Scotland when the Normans were driven out, but they got more than they bargained for. My cousin found an old book at a university in Scotland that said, "Beware of the Elletts and Armstrongs for they are a fearsome lot". I think the original Ellett came over with William Penn and settled in Virginia. My uncle did extensive research and as far as he could determine, all the Ellets in the US decended (or were slaves of) this one man.
